SugarCRM vs vTigerCRM

Hi all, I liked vTiger 4.2.x as a good and balanced OpenSource CRM solution. Most other powerful solutions weren't LAMP, Java and other technologies. Anyways I developed for some time over vTiger 4.2 and things were fine, still I had some criticism about the vTiger code which I had discussed with Gopal, one of the core developers. Anyways, I was awaiting the release of vTiger 5.0 unpatiently and as soon as an RC was there I was grapping it, installing, watching the differences. It could be me who was expecting more than I am supposed to but vTiger 5.0 was, for me, disappointing. I deceided finally to go see what SugarCRM offers in the OpenSource edition. I didn't like SugarCRM in the past because of their liesence, which hasn't changed at all as far as I know, thus I started the comparison with a sort of dislike towards SugarCRM. After few hours of playing with both CRM solutions from almost all sides I came to the following results: Installation: Sugar wins. It could be a bit complicated for non tikkies, but I still see it way better than vTiger though there were no indication Sugar was creating the database or it just stucked. UI: Sugar wins. vTiger 4 was exactly as Sugar but in vTiger 5 they went too far with tabs and sub-tabs. What was more confusing is seeing a module repeated in many sections. Adding modules: Sugar wins. An installer is there to add new modules, the fact that those features are in Sugar makes you wonder: what additions vTiger made to the core? I started to get the feeling that vTiger CRM is Sugar with some aimless modifications and some modules. Diversity of modules: vTiger wins. I missed Products module, Orders module though I didn't check the community yet. Someone may have already done them. Administration area: Sugar wins. Sugar is really great when it comes to administration. Though vTiger is based on Sugar, I have seen in vTiger's code they have disabled some features that were built-in Sugar such as mandatory custom fields. Theming: Sugar's Smarty is way better than vTiger's. I really think it's easier to theme Sugar. Code base: Sugar wins. I really liked Sugar's code over vTiger's. It's still clean and tidy. I believe I can do things faster on Sugar than on vTiger. To sum up: I generally believe if you have no problems with SugarCRM liesence then you go for it. It will give you way better stability and scalability than vTiger. If you're a coder seeking a better code then go for Sugar. I'd only recommend vTiger in case it will fit your needs without any developing, otherwise you may end-up wasting some time which you could save doing it with Sugar. -- This is my own opinion and I fully respect both companies with their codes, developers and efforts. It's only their efforts that allowed us to compare and reach the best solution. I hope this helps anyone.
My team at work uses SugarCRM and we like it, we tried many other CRM's but it's the best so far. However I believe that someday we will migrate to some closed-source non-free application :(
What about Daffodil’s open source CRM solution? It is a feature-rich software that seamlessly integrates all aspects of customer life cycle from identifying business opportunities to sustaining existing customers.
Hello Omar! I am Richie from vtiger. Your points are well taken. Let me point out to you that things had changed quite a lot in the 5.0 release and that is the time when we introduced the tabs and subtabs feature. But again, this was/is our interpretation of usability and you are free to reach yours. Apropos the code-base, we have had several rounds of code clean-up and API generation (I admit though that it is still not that mature but we are reaching there). I am not sure if you checked out the Security feature. It is almost at par with any other Commercial-grade open source. I may even hazard to say that I have not seen any other open source with as much depth in it as we have in the Security model. Yes, theme-ing is still not as easy as I would like but then we are working on it. Regarding the module-addition part, we were working on it but had to drop it as we had other pressing needs like releasing 5.0.3. Once that is through, we will get back to that issue too. We are expecting to release 5.0.3 shortly. Thanks for mentioning us. You are welcome to have your views. I invite you to post the same at http://blogs.vtiger.com too. Thanks, Richie
I reckon vTiger wins hands down on the interface. While Sigar's default look is more "corporate" vTiger is more "web2", with thought obviously going to being simpler, lighter, faster. In comparison Sugar feels cluttered and cumbersome. For example - top-level items. It's a commonly-held UI design principle to have 5-7 top-level nav items. Sugar has 12, which look pretty daunting and are a pain to hunt through. vTiger has 8 (with dropdowns, much nicer) and feels much more manageable. Also, the default vTiger interface has a lot of nicer things, like inline editing of text fields, and the dashboard where you can drag around your components, awesome. Also, the Sugar plugin for Thunderbird (Sugarbird) had one problem for me where it wouldn't automatically grab new contacts made in Sugar into my local address book. I did have Sugar installed and set up but I'm gonna give vTiger a shot.
Comparison SugarCRM Vs. vTiger as summary we can say that 1- SugarCRM support Thunderbird (Sugarbird) 2- Sugar NoteIn* is an open-source module for sugarCRM wich provides a VoIP integration with Asterisk. while Vtiger is not support this. what do you think? ---------------------------------------- Mahmoud Rizk

Hello Omar Yes, theme-ing is still not as easy as I would like but then we are working on it. Thanks for such a nice post.
I think both solutions are too good to deploy http://www.testboss.com
I tried to use SugarCRM, however, it was too slow. My staff complained about how slow it was. I tried a demo of vTiger, and I was amazed at the difference in speed. Also, I tried to install several Sugar CRM modules, not one worked the way it was supposed to, and several left he system non-functioning. My biggest complaint of Sugar CRM is a lack of quality from their contributors, who put in modules that simply don't work. I've installed two vTiger Modules, they both installed flawlessly, and they have both worked flawlessly. My install of vTiger went very smooth, no issues on the install. Hands down, I'm a vtiger convert. I have no sugar left for SugarCRM.
