Etisalat 3.5G USB Modem under Linux

I have recently purchased a 3.5G USB modem from the Egyptian Mobile Broadband provider, Etisalat. So far I have tried all packages provided by Etisalat Egypt (384Kb and 3.6Mb) and I must say they're 100% working under Linux exactly as expected. Using NetworkManager 0.7 which is currently available in Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex, Gentoo and Debian Experimental, I managed to use the USB modem with few clicks under both KDE and GNOME. Etisalat ships with the modem a windows application to send SMS and browse SMS directory on the SIM. KMobileTools (KDE) managed to do the same job in a perfect way and I think gnome-phone-manager or gnokii can do exactly the same job. Etisalat's USB is a HUAWEI E160G HSDPA modem and I believe that both Mobinil and Vodafone modems have similar modems and will work just fine but YMMV.

Assalamo Alaykom, Thanks for your post, you gave me hope after being turned down by Etisalat's Tech Support. They said that they just don't support Linux, and that I have to install windows ^.^ Anyways, I am using Jaunty (Ubuntu 9.04), and trying to set it up using the NetworkManager. I failed to do so. What I have reached so far is: Selected the country (Egypt) and the network (Etisalat). But when I click on the new "Etisalat" configuration, it does not connect. Any ideas on how to get it working? Your help is really highly appreciated Thanks in advance Muhammad Atef

Hello Muhammed, I had some bad time trying to get the modem working under Jaunty. As far as I remember there's a bug in NetworkManager in Jaunty. The temporary solution was to logout and log back in. I no longer use that modem, I returned it and took my money back. I also no longer use Linux.

I have the same usb modem ( E160G ) and it is working on ubuntu but no sites is open on firefox There is a connection and i get Ip but no sites is open where is the problem and what do you do for your usb modem to get it working fine ?

I haven't done anything in this regard. I think you could check if your DNS servers are reachable. Good luck anyways.

which version of linux u were using Omar? i was using fedoara it was not working fine. i was testing it in friends home, if it could do better i could have bought it. but dint. Regards Ahmed

HI Omar, Ia m Yehia Monir , and i got used to use Vodafone USB modem and it works very fine with me - but when i started to use Etisalat USB modem , i even cant see it while iam configuring it and after configure it . i really would like to know what exactly you did step by step, as i dont want to use any other USB modem but Etisalat. thanks if you helped me and if you didnt ..... also thanks :)

i'm using etisalat usb modem e1550 and it's working great even with no config at all just selecting the network icon 3g brodband and select egypt then etisalat and it connect .

you have to start make a new broadband connection using the network manager (select egypt and etisalat) then the default etisalat after that edit the connection and go to the PPP settings, configure the authentication method remove all the methods except CHAP then save settings and it should work.
