Linux and HP Pavilion dv6183ea problem

Last week, I finally bought my first PC since I entered the computer era.
I went for a HP Pavilion dv6183ea which sports a gigantic Intel Centrino Duo 2 running at 1.83GHz, a nVidia GeForce Go 7400 with 256MBs of RAM, etc [read full specification at HP]
As a Linux fan, a newbie though, I deceided to install Linux. In the meantime, our company's system admin and I prefers openSUSE so that's what I went for.
Things went fine with installation and I had an eye candy OS which I started quickly testing and optimizing.
Something that bugged me a little bit in the beginning was that both mouse and keyboard hang for a second or two.
I thought at first it's a hardware issue since it was accompanied by other actions like attempting to connect to a wi-fi.
After some search it was clear there's nothing we can do since the bug is the synaptics mouse with the kernel producing the mentioned behavior.
I didn't try other distros but I deceided not to install Linux. I will just install FreeBSD and will keep you updated about this in the near future.
Anyways, I strongly recommend people who intend to install Linux on the HP Pavilion laptop family to think twice. This laptop doesn't seem to be designed with Linux in mind. :)
I hope this helps anyone.

You give up easily

I installed Open Suse on my thinkpad T60p
Man that was a pain in the bones.
I had to manually install the wifi driver from since I customized my notebook with a non intel wifi ( i do not like intel but I love thinkpads so I had to use in intel processor but damn me if I also buy an intel wifi )

I had to manually install ATI drivers.
I had to go to hell to get Beryl installed.

I still have semi frequent hangs when I run vmware, the notebook can hang for five minutes and then come back of its own accord.

But man beryl is heaven.
Heaven, nirvana, moksha, 3erfan.
Really after using beryl, I am willing to live with anykind of instability just to stay in beryl. Also I have a ATI X1700, dual core and 7200RMP hard drive so this machine rocks.
Hope you install anything with beryl on it.

Gave up?

Man, I didn't give up that easy.
Having your keyboard and mouse hanging is not something you can live with.
Also the trade might differe from one to another, i.e. you traded usability for eye-candy, I wouldn't do that if I were you.
I want to use this machine to develop on, not to put in a hall of fame to show some AIXGL boxes and effect. Yet, having these things running smooth is a great prize for the FOSS fans and developers.
Anyways I wish you luck with Mashy and the laptop.

Don't know

Well, I think when product is not around anymore is, IMHO, not a straightforward thing. It gives me no indications when it happens. Even very good computer models will not last in the market that long.
If you're from one of the arab countries then probably you can never tell why it did.

Well

This might be too late, Zack.
I managed to have all my laptop's hardware (maybe except the modem which I don't use at all) to work under Ubuntu Edgy Eft and Feisty Fawn. I also managed to repeat the same with Debian Etch and Lenny/sid.
I am now more enjoying life on my laptop.
Thanks a million for taking the time to write this.

I have experienced basically the same problems with my dv9000. I got wireless working with ndiswrapper and WinXP driver for Broadcom chip. Webcam doesn't work and researching web indicates the Sonix chip is too new for Linux. I can wait. Otherwise Mandriva Spring 2007 works great.

Hp Pavillion

Thank you for this. A friend of mine was trying to do this not so long ago and it never worked. I'm not tech savvy but at least i can tell him why it didn't work now.
