Drupal 5.0: Taking you to the next level!

Since the early days of CMS, I went through developing to and based on many CMS starting from EZ Publish, XOOPS, PHP Nuke, PHP Website to Mambo.
I liked Mambo to the extent that I once started a small project in Mambo Forge to localize Mambo for Arabs.
I must confest that when I first heard of Drupal it was in a real hurry thus I didn't take much time to 'study' drupal.
After some time I had the opportunity to develop a solution based on drupal.
At first things looked weird but after few hours of reading and browing code I was astonished.
Drupal is really uncomparable to any other CMS -except Zope.
Drupal has some weak points like every solution has. For starters: preventing guests from changing theme, having no expiration date for posts, lack of module installer, the poor forum shipped with the base system, not willing to integrate with any other spen source solution, etc.
All those are there in many other solutions and of course in Mambo and PHP Nuke.
While I see drupal going from success to another. Still Mambo is moving very slow, even after the fork from Mambo to Joomla, things didn't heat up. I believe besides the name change nothing much happened to Mambo.
Drupal's hooks gave it a great amount of felxibility and extensibility. Simply I put drupal aside from all other Open Source solution in regards to having the team doing some good amount of market research before implementing features thus choosing the right thing to do, still keeping own vision though.
What I see now is Dries Buytaert, aided by the folks contributing the core, is going to take drupal the next level by the release of Drupal 5.0.
Implementing some cool features like jQuery will make Drupal stand from the crowd, I even believe that posts all around the internet trying to distinguish one CMS from another which lead some guys to create a website specifically for comparing CMS applications only! I believe these posts will vanish few months after the release of Drupal 5.0.
Dries, we are awaiting the next release!

drupal has a scheduler

drupal has a scheduler module to schedule post publishing/unpublishing and another one to schedule closing comments.

it has modules to integrate several authentication systems, some webmail clients, vbulletin, gallery2, blogging clients, google maps, etc. if something is missing then it means no one was interested enough to develop it.

allowing guests to change themes is a simple hack, it's not in core yes but it is doable without patching core (some websites do it).

starting from 4.7 modules install by just enabling them, you still need to upload module files yourself but that's a good thing cause the alternative is to give your webserver write access to your code.

what's missing from drupal forum?

Omar's picture
yes, drupal has all that

But I am taking about the 'standard' installation, i.e. the code you get from drupal without any hacks/modules.
Yes, there're modules to integrate but the core doesn't natively do this.
Changing theme is a simple hack while it's a standard feature in Mambo/Joomla.
Starting from 4.7 installing modules is by enabling them, you still need to (if you don't have or know SSH): download the .tar.gz, uncompress it, upload it to modules folder, then enable it. While is Mambo (I haven't installed Mambo a year maybe more ago) you can upload from Mambo's UI the file and you're done.
What's missing in drupal forum isn't very short to tell, I suggest you install phpBB/IPB/VB forums and see for yourself.
By the way, couldn't you please sign the comment? Just to get to know you. :)

Congrats

A lot of reasons to love and stick to Drupal

The 1st time using Mambo, the button got stuck and could not do anything, and never tried again

With Drupal, at first sight, it looks unsightly :) But it was because you were looking at other excellent and fabulous sites that proudly said they are powered by Drupal that you are convinced that what you want can be done with Drupal

Plus URL alias, and absence of `Powered by ...' and hard-coded links like in Xoops...

Anyway all the best to all of you

I been building CMS sites for a while now...

But I have never tried Drupal, I have mostly stayed with such programmes such as WordPress and Joomla, I know WordPress is not really a CMS but it can be if you treat it right.

Though after reading your post I may take a dive in to the wild bushes of the CMS world and give Drupal a test run on one of my many hosting sites.

Good read.

Joomla as CMS

I've used wordpress for years now, mostly due to the huge amount of templates and plugins available for that platform. Scouting some of the better performing sites, I noticed that a few are running Joomla now. I'm doing a trial install on a test site now.

RE: Wordpress is fine ...

As always, you have to match the tool to the task. For a simple blog, Wordpress is great. I reserve Drupal for when my clients need a muscular CMS.

Drupal is definitely one of the best out there, but I don't like it's documentation. A CMS without a really really really good doc isn't helpful ..

Wordpress

I've used Wordpress in the past also (looks like many have) just because I think this used to be the most versatile option with all the different templates etc. But I do think that Drupal is catching up fast and it's now only a matter of time.

Drupal is cool

Hey Guys ,
Are you completely (or relatively) new to Drupal? Or do you know just enough to be dangerous? Are you used to working with other content management systems, and willing to lend your perspective in improving the way Drupal works?

If so, you're a perfect candidate to help with usability testing and improving documentation! Take notes as you're going through Drupal on things you find difficult or confusing, and translate those notes into an issue which will show up in the issue tracker. Make sure to be clear as possible about what the problem was and provide suggestions on how to improve it -- this makes it easier for developers to help!

No doubt Drupal 5.0 rocks but now i feel u guys try other version too..

Thanks
